Proposed Sewage Plan for Lewis Bay Near Cape Cod

In Massachusetts, State & Local on September 16, 2010 at 9:18 am

The Massachusetts state Department of Environmental Protection is seeking public comment on a proposed sewage plan for Lewis Bay that would help reduce the nutrient nitrogen in the coastal waters.  Excessive nitrogen levels can lead to negative impacts on fish and other aquatic life due to a loss of eelgrass beds and reduced amounts of dissolved oxygen concentrations.  The plan calls for reducing watershed sources of nitrogen by up to 73 percent. Most of the reductions will be from better treatment and handling of wastewater, but nitrogen from storm water and fertilizer use should also be controlled wherever possible.

Additional information about the proposal can be found here:

Public comments may be submitted by October 22 by email at michael.ackerman@state.ma.us or by mail at Michael Ackerman, Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Watershed Management, 627 Main St., second floor, Worcester, MA 01608.
